As a family, our primary goal is to avoid living inside of narrowly defined parameters. The civilizing powers-that-be try to compartmentalize everything on the planet in an effort to be in ultimate control. I mean what else could “public” education be, if not a control mechanism? As we pull further away from post-industrial society, the absurdity of such a rigid institution becomes ever more evident. It’s not about democratizing education for the masses, it’s about creating obedient automatons. And worse…it’s about confining human aspiration.

We conscientiously choose to live outside of boxes. Whether this be schools, or any bureaucracy that doesn’t have our best interests in mind (and that’s pretty much all of them by definition). Remember, retrograde doesn’t mean antiquated, it means doing your own thing in opposition to the “norm.” Our humble observation is that most people are running a script of what they’ve been told their lives should look like. It’s a sort of parasitic mind virus that unfortunately affects most people. We are working diligently to extract ourselves from that collective illness.

But when you jettison convention a vacuum is created. What you fill that space with is your decision. However, we know from experience that it can be daunting (and lonely) to go against the grain. Sometimes, you end up doubting your intuition. This is where books can help. Below are some volumes that helped support us along the way.
